About this place
Add a lamb skewer to your usual order of yakitori. At Shougen, one diner said the lamb’s spicy seasoning made a lasting impression, offering a change from the familiar flavours of grilled chicken. Another described the lamb as seasoned in an ethnic style and enjoyed it alongside yakitori. Lamb skewers cost ¥242; chicken thigh is available with salt or sauce for ¥110, while negima (chicken and spring onion) and chicken skin are each ¥154, also with salt or sauce. Pick individual skewers, or start with the chef’s assorted “Shougen skewers 6 pieces” platter for ¥847.
Between skewers, choose something light, such as cucumber with salted sauce or Chinese cabbage kimchi, or a more substantial plate like fried chicken or agedashi tofu. The fried chicken wings, listed as “addictively spicy”, come in portions of 1, 3 or 5, making them suitable for a small bite or sharing around the table. Several diners have singled out the wings as a favourite. One also named the sesame-salt liver among their preferred skewers. The selection extends beyond chicken to vegetable and beef skewers, as well as shimacho (beef offal), so there is room to vary both the meat and the seasoning.
Drinks include draft beer, highballs and shochu. The menu lists a medium draft beer at ¥319 and its various highballs at ¥319. The menu works for a casual evening centred on skewers, as well as for a group meal with a banquet course that includes chicken dishes and salad.
For a final dish, there are grilled rice balls and a grilled chicken rice bowl, along with egg soup and Korean cold noodles. The winter-only motsunabe (hot pot with offal) can be finished with ramen or rice porridge. Whether you want to pick out a few skewers one by one or gather around a hot pot, the menu offers options for different group sizes and appetites.
